Module One – Using Devices and Handling Information

Unit 1.7 – Use files and folders to organise and retrieve information (including local and remote storage).

Task 1 – Getting Organised

Learners begin with an introductory discussion, identifying areas of their lives they like to keep organised before exploring the benefits of applying the same good practice to their digital world.

Task 2 – Folder Hierarchies

Learners become familiar with folder hierarchies and learn the importance of categorising and naming main folders and subfolders effectively.

Task 3 – Organising Files and Folders

Learners demonstrate that they can correctly structure folders, subfolders and digital files using cut-out templates. The activity can be completed individually, in pairs or in groups and may also be timed to introduce an element of friendly competition. (Tutor Answer Guidance included.)

Task 4 – Digital Housekeeping

Learners identify five accurate and five misleading statements relating to good digital housekeeping practices. (Tutor Answer Guidance included.)

Task 5 – Practical Folder Management

Learners complete six practical mini-tasks to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the unit. Tutors observe each task and use the accompanying witness checklist to confirm successful completion.

Task 6 – Local and Remote Storage

Learners read and discuss statements describing local and remote storage before matching the correct benefits and considerations to each type of storage. They also identify three commonly used cloud storage services.

Task 7 – Putting Learning into Practice

Learners apply the knowledge gained throughout the unit by carrying out a thorough digital housekeeping exercise on one or more of their own devices (for example, a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone).
